GAPIC organises the 5th edition of SPSS Initiation Course

Support Bureau for Scientific and Technological Research and Innovation (GAPIC)

The 5th edition of the SPSS Initiation Course, organised by GAPIC in collaboration with Lisbon’s Academic Centre of Medicine (CAML), was taught through a blended learning program last July.

This annual course aims to address some difficulties felt by students and medical interns in their scientific research, especially to raise awareness to the potential of using statistics in scientific research, to acquaint the trainees with some statistical theory concepts and to endow them with general knowledge that they can adequately use in practice, having SPPS as support.

16 trainees, out of 39 applicants, attended the course, most of whom were in the Integrated Master’s Degree in Medicine (CMIM), but there were also master’s and Ph.D. students as well as medical interns.

At the beginning of the course, the trainees generally self-assessed their knowledge in statistics and SPSS as bad. However, after the course, students’ knowledge improved in the sense that they evaluated their knowledge about basic statistics as good, their knowledge about producing and transforming data with SPSS as sufficient and their knowledge about descriptive and inferential analysis as insufficient. (Trainees’ Level of Knowledge about Statistics and SPSS at the beginning and at the end of the Course

In general, trainees considered the course good, especially the quality of the program, its contents, the classes, the organisation and the logistics. The trainer’s performance was classified as very good by most trainees. (Assessment of the Course’s Quality

Considering the positive outcome of another edition of the Initiation Course to SPSS and the enrolment of FMUL students and medical interns, GAPIC intends to keep organising this course and improve its quality.
