João Eurico Fonseca is the new President of the Portuguese Society of Rheumatology

On October 5th researcher João Eurico Fonseca took office as the new President of the Portuguese Society of Rheumatology (SPR). 

Specialised in Rheumatology, João Eurico Fonseca is the Coordinator of the Day Hospital in the North Lisbon Hospital Centre, Santa Maria Hospital, and Head of the Rheumatology Research Unit of the Institute of Molecular Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine. He is also Assistant Professor with Tenure, teaching Rheumatology and Biomechanics of Tissues at FMUL. 

In addition, as a principal investigator, he has participated in over 20 clinical trials in the area of rheumatoid arthritis and has focused his work on the research of inflammatory joint diseases. He is a member of the Scientific Committee of the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) and part of the Editorial Board of several scientific journals. He is the author of more than 150 articles indexed in Pubmed. 

According to Professor Fonseca, the new Board of SPR considers three main areas of performance as of key importance: 

1) To document with precision the medical and social impact of rheumatoid diseases in Portugal, identify the deficiencies in medical care in this area and draw awareness to the importance of having an adequate service in Rheumatology in Portugal; 
2) To guarantee the quality and stability of human resources; 
3) To ensure the excellence of all activities which originate in Rheumatology.
