Protein Crystallography: Anatomy of life at atomic level
Margarida Archer Frazão
Membrane Protein Crystallography Laboratory, Macromolecular Crystallography Unit, Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica (ITQB-UNL)
X-ray crystallography is a technique that allows the determination of the three-dimensional structures of biological macromolecules. This experimental technique is based on the X-ray diffraction analysis of crystals. It enables the visualization of protein structures at the atomic level and enhances our understanding of protein function. Structural biology plays a pivotal role in modern biology, both in the fundamental understanding of living things and in the design of new treatments for diseases.
In this seminar, the various steps involved in Crystallography will be briefly described. The work on the structural characterization of catechol-methyltransferase (COMT) in complex with several inhibitors will be presented. COMT-inhibitors are used as adjuvants in the therapy of Parkinson´s Disease. Project developed in collaboration with the pharmaceutical company BIAL.
Nanocourse Technology Transfer and Intellectual Property in Biomedicine

Technology Transfer and Intellectual Property in Biomedicine
Organização: Nuno Afonso
IMM
Technology transfer from Universities to Industry is nowadays invaluable in the development of global economies and societies. This course intends to show to researchers the importance of these aspects, as well as to stimulate the identification of opportunities for technology transfer in the scope of their research in biomedicine. Technology transfer will be addressed from the view point not only of the researcher but also of the entrepreneur, which might stimulate the participants to create their own spin-off venture. The contents include information on both national and international support institutions that are crucial in the development of a venture and the protection of intellectual property. The aim of this course is to provide a first contact to researchers with matters such as the commercialization of products and technologies derived from biomedical research and also the protection of their inventions through the generation of patents.
