Presentation session on the Repository of the University of Lisbon

Susana Henriques

A presentation session on the Repository of the University o Lisbon was held on 14 October at Aula Magna of FMUL – Repositório.UL, followed by a debate on the topic: “Open Access to the scientific output of FMUL”: How to view it? How to cooperate?

The session was led by the Deputy Director of FMUL, Professor Miguel Castanho and by the Pro-Rector Professor Pedro Veiga, with the collaboration of Professor Vaz Carneiro (Head, Main Library) and the Repository.UL Team.

The Repository.UL aims to store, maintain and disseminate the Institution’s scientific output and contribute to:
- Foster free access to the research carried out at the University of Lisbon and increase its impact;
- Increase the visibility of, and access to, scientific production and facilitate the management of the information about scientific output;
- Increase the visibility of the UL and of its staff, acting as a tangible indicator of the quality and scientific, economic and social relevance of its teaching and research activities;
- Preserve the intellectual memory of UL.

The Repository.UL. is part of the growing project to set up free access repositories and archives, included in the Open Access Initiative, and of national projects such as RCAAP (Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal – Open Access Scientific Repository of Portugal), which brings together over 48,000 documents from several national scientific repositories.

The topics discussed included the issues inherent to the availability of contents in institutional repositories, namely deposit policies, editorial policies and copyright.

At the information session, the Repository.UL team drew the attention of the entire scientific community to the importance of the involvement of all in registering the work from their research activities, namely: PhD theses, master degree dissertations; articles published in national and international scientific journals, presentations in conferences and congresses, focusing on the need to raise the visibility and the profile of the institutions and its researchers.
