Interview with Professor Bugalho de Almeida - Director of the Pulmonology University Clinic
Interview with Professor Bugalho de Almeida - Director of the Pulmonology University Clinic

The newsletter of the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon interviewed Professor António Bugalho de Almeida, Director of the Pulmonology University Clinic and Clinical Director of the Pulmonology Service of Santa Maria Hospital. He told us about the Clinic, the Service he has directed since 1999, which he is now leaving due to retirement.

Newsletter: Professor, please tell us about the origin of the Pulmonology Clinic, its foundation, the founders, and the most marking events of this unit.

Prof. Bugalho de Almeida:
I begin by telling you why I chose the 23rd July for my last lesson. This was because the Decree-Law that set up the Lung Diseases Clinic (CDC) at the then Santa Marta Hospital was published on 21 July 1934. The Director of the Clinic and the Head of the subject was Professor Fausto Lopo de Carvalho.

He came from the University of Coimbra, where he graduated and was appointed as a lecturer, to FMUL in 1926, where he worked with Professor Egas Moniz in discovering the methodology that allowed the execution of angiopneumography. The research results were presented in 1931 at the Academy of Sciences in Lisbon and at the French Academy, and were, in fact, an historical landmark. Professor Lopo de Carvalho was devoted to this field until the end of his stay at the Faculty of Medicine, until his retirement.
